Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder George Maluleka has given an update on his contract situation with the club, as he shared some of the difficulties he’s had during the past season.
Maluleka’s two-year deal with the treble winners is due to expire at the end of June, but the club has an option in the player’s contract to extend for another year.
As reported by the Siya crew, Sundowns have a deadline of May 31 to indicate if they want to hold onto the player. This has previously been confirmed by his representative, Sean Roberts.
“The plus one (in the contract) is there. I’m still a Mamelodi Sundowns player, so yeah, the plus one is there,” Maluleka told the Siya crew.
“I’m fine where I am. I’ve been there for two seasons now and it’s been good. I’ve been happy at Sundowns. Like I said, it’s a two plus one (contract), so it’s in their hands.
I still have a lot to offer. As long as I wake up and have a purpose, then it means I can still push. I am not one to force. When it’s the end, then I will call it. But I still feel strong and still have a lot to offer.”
The 33-year-old played five matches in all competitions, most of them coming in April when he scored and came up with two assists for the side.
“My season was tough, demanding. Lots of disappointments, lots of highs, lots of lows. Obviously you want to play all the games, but you don’t as an individual.
Whatever chance you get, you grab it with both hands. But with that happening, there are injuries and setbacks and that’s how it normally goes.
There were so many games I was supposed to play, but I got injured. I did not play as much, but it’s nice to know that I still have that small contribution,” the former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder said.
Nonetheless, Maluleka is delighted to have been part of a side that won a domestic treble.
“It’s a good feeling to be involved and be part of the team’s success.
I am very happy for my colleagues and everyone who contributed towards the success. Being a teammate, whether you are playing or not, is important.
We all have different roles that we play, so that’s why encouraging each other is key.”
