A number people died in floods in the Eastern Cape and a young girl named Lathitha Nako was striked and killed by a lightning in Buhlanyanga.

Two person died in Ward 12 (Buhlanyanga), Ingquza Hill Local Municipality, while another in Ward 28 (Matheko), King Sabata Dalindyebo Local Municipality.

More than 260 households were affected, with over 160 families displaced.

Others sustained partial damage to their livestock, road infrastructure and electricity supply.

The O.R. Tambo District Municipality said disaster response measures were activated.

The Municipality also said in an update, on Sunday morning, the return of power has been critical in supporting water services, health facilities and ongoing relief operations.

Mesuli Ngqondwana, Executive Mayor of the Municipality, said “our focus is to protect lives, restore dignity and ensure that no family is left without support.”

“We are present with our communities and will continue working until stability is restored.”

Lathitha Nako was doing her matric at Buhlenyana secondary school. She was killed by a lightning while she was sleeping with her sister in bed.
