Former Kaizer Chiefs winger Junior Khanye has slammed head coach Fernando Da Cruz following Amakhosi’s 2-1 Soweto Derby defeat to Orlando Pirates.
Khanye argued that Rushwin Dortley should have started in place of Inacio Miguel, labelling the selection choice a massive tactical blunder.
The highly anticipated Betway Premiership showdown at FNB Stadium left the Naturena faithful devastated as rivals Orlando Pirates claimed the bragging rights.
For Khanye, the root cause of the loss lay squarely in Da Cruz’s defensive team selection. Just days prior, left-footed centre-back Rushwin Dortley had made an emotional, highly praised return after an 18-month injury layoff. Dortley starred in a convincing 3-0 Carling Knockout Cup win over TS Galaxy, helping Amakhosi keep a crucial clean sheet.
Yet, when the team sheets for the Soweto Derby were released, Dortley was relegated back to the substitutes’ bench to accommodate the returning Inacio Miguel. It was a decision that immediately raised eyebrows among analysts and fans alike.
Khanye Questions Lack of Continuity
Speaking passionately on iDiski TV, Junior Khanye expressed total bewilderment at the coaching staff’s logic.
“The Chiefs coach made a blunder. I don’t understand why he’s putting Dortley outside,” Khanye stated firmly. “Where’s the continuity as a team? Starting with the coach as a leader. These guys never conceded against Galaxy.”
Khanye believes that throwing away defensive momentum ahead of South Africa’s biggest football match disrupted the team’s balance.
Dortley’s calmness on the ball, accurate passing range, and ability to break lines from the back were sorely missed as Chiefs struggled to contain a high-pressing Pirates attack.
Miguel’s Nightmare Derby Validates Concerns
The unfolding match only served to validate Khanye’s pre-match fears. Inacio Miguel endured a disastrous afternoon at the heart of the defense.
Lacking the necessary pace to cope with counter-attacks in Da Cruz’s high-line defensive system, Miguel frequently resorted to cynical fouls.
The frustration culminated deep into stoppage time when Miguel was shown a red card, compounding his poor disciplinary record since arriving at Naturena. The sending-off left Chiefs down to ten men and extinguished any lingering hopes of a late equalizer.
The Road Ahead for Da Cruz
The defeat has brought immense pressure to the Kaizer Chiefs official platform and management. Amakhosi find themselves slipping down the league standings, sitting fifth and trailing significantly behind the early pacesetters.
With Miguel now facing a suspension and internal disciplinary scrutiny for his disciplinary record, the door has swung wide open for Rushwin Dortley to permanently reclaim his spot.
Pundits like Khanye insist that if Kaizer Chiefs hope to salvage their campaign, Da Cruz must stop favouring reputation over form and build the defense around the technical poise of Dortley.
