Former Kaizer Chiefs academy product Zitha Kwinika has spoken for the first time since his move back to his boyhood club was confirmed by Stellenbosch Football Club.
The 28-year-old has been one of the standout players at Stellies over the past two seasons and captained them to a record finish in the league which could be fourth or fifth depending on Orlando Pirates’ result against SuperSport United on Monday evening.
It marked a major upturn for Steve Barker’s club who narrowly avoided relegation last season, with Kwinika a mainstay in the heart of the defence and showing real leadership that’s convinced Chiefs to lure him back to Naturena.
“I’m grateful for Stellenbosch, especially Coach Steve Barker, Rob Benadie but importantly my teammates,” he said after the move was made official by the club.
“They helped me become a better player, so I am quite grateful for the team, and everyone involved in the backroom staff. I also want to thank the supporters for the love they showed me.
“Even though I am looking forward to the new challenge that lies ahead of me I will always represent the Winelands wherever I go because they helped me to grow and become a better player, a better individual, and a better human being.”
Kwinika racked up 56 appearances over the past two seasons in all competitions since his move from the now-defunct Bidvest Wits – where he won the league title – in September 2020. He was also named Stellenbosch FC Footballer and Players’ Player of the Season.
