Kaizer Chiefs are believed to be pressing ahead with plans to offload first-team midfielder Anthony “Teddy” Akumu with under a year remaining on his contract at the club.
Following an underwhelming season with just two starts, the Kenyan international is believed to be not in coaches Arthur Zwane and Dillon Sheppard’s plans for next season.
Akumu was brought in during Ernst Middendorp’s spell in charge in January 2020 and was a regular feature under the German.
This season he has started just two games with the last of his 10 appearances in November last year when Stuart Baxter was still in charge.
Akumu enjoyed all of his game time this season under Baxter and was also used frequently by Gavin Hunt last term until his sacking.
When Zwane and Sheppard took over from Hunt last season he also didn’t play and was only used when Baxter had arrived at the club coming on in the CAF Champions League away win at Wydad Casablanca and the final against Al Ahly.
He is clearly not preferred by Zwane and those that are backing him in management towards setting the plan for next season.
The sticky point for the club in seeking to offload Akumu is that he still has a year remaining on his deal.
He will be placed on transfer if no agreement is reached in terminating his contract.
The 29-year-old’s name has already been mentioned in Tanzania even though he is said to be keen on remaining in the PSL where his earnings will be better.
Akumu joined Chiefs from ZESCO United having also played in Sudan and back home in Kenya before then.
He has 47 appearances and two goals for AmaKhosi.
