Kaizer Chiefs head coach Arthur Zwane has provided an injury update on captain Itumeleng Khune who hobbled off in their 3-1 win over Stellenbosch FC on Sunday.

Fans feared the worst when the 35-year-old went down with what appeared to be a groin strain.

After all, Khune had worked himself back as the club’s number one choice and has been pivotal in the team’s seven-game unbeaten run in all competitions.

Zwane admits he too feared the worst when Khune went down injured but had his fears alleviated after consulting the club’s medical staff. “I thought maybe he had snapped his groin but when I had a chat with him, he told me no.”

“Even our physio and the team doctor told me it’s not bad. We don’t know whether he is going to be out for the next game in terms of availability or the cup game that we’ll be playing in Durban, so we will see.

We will monitor him,” he told journalists after the match.

Khune was replaced by Brandon Peterson, the 28-year-old goalkeeper who usurped him as the club’s number one last season as Amakhosi saw out a comfortable victory.

Chiefs have four more matches to play this month as they host both Chippa United and TS Galaxy before traveling to Durban for the MTN8 semifinal second leg and thereafter the Soweto Derby against Orlando Pirates.
