SuperSport has done decent transfer business in the last two years, selling some of their best players to Mamelodi Sundowns.

These include the likes of Grant Kekana, Aubrey Modiba and, most recently, Ronwen Williams, Sipho Mbule and Teboho Mokoena.

Undoubtedly, these players left a big void, but coach Gavin Hunt has managed to keep the team afloat by fusing top-performing rookies and senior players.

While they pocketed millions, Matthews revealed that they channelled some of the funds to acquire the likes of Thabang Sibanyoni and Ricardo Goss, among others.

“You know we took Tebza’s money, and we utilised that to bring us some experienced players such as Grant Margeman, Thabang Sibanyoni, Ricardo Goss and Siphesihle Ndlovu,” Matthews told FARPost

“Not only that, we went to the Diski team and secured our boys for four years, signed them on long-term contracts because we believe in them, so we re-invented the team with Mokoena’s proceeds.

“That’s how we have to operate as a club for another one to two years. To operate as a club, we have to sell again.”

At the moment, Matsatsantsa are listening to offers for youngsters Jamie Webber and Luke Fleurs.

Under the current circumstances, Matthews admits that they must be patient with their youthful squad if they are to carve out more top players of Mokoena’s calibre.

“We have five to six very important games that will be tough, and we have got a very thin squad. If you look at my bench, most players are between 19 and 22,” he said.

“So we are not putting any experienced players from the bench. If you look at our game against Swallows, we had so many young players on the bench.

“So, very young team that is going to get better, for us is to be patient with them and polish them.

“We know we are going to lose them to Chiefs, Pirates and Sundowns over time, but when that happens, we will do the best, make a good transfer, and re-invest the money as we did with Teboho Mokoena.”
