Lebo Mothiba (Strasbourg)
Still ignored by Hugo Broos, Mothiba remains one of the most high-profile South African players still to be considered by the Belgian boss.
Based on his Ligue 1 form this season—only one start for Strasbourg—he’s hardly a big loss, although can Bafana afford to overlook the 27-year-old indefinitely?
Melusi Buthelezi (TS Galaxy)
A new face in Broos’s Bafana squad in September, but the TS Galaxy stopper hasn’t been included this time around.
Gaston Sirino (Mamelodi Sundowns)
There were some hopes that this international break could have marked Sirino’s debut with Bafana Bafana, as the Uruguayan is now eligible to represent his adopted nation.
Injury prevents him from being included, regardless of whether or not it had been Broos’s intention to name him.
Keagan Dolly (Kaizer Chiefs)
Despite the occasional moment of excellence for Chiefs, Dolly’s performances have been criticised under Arthur Zwane this season.
Some believe the coach is the reason why the attacker has been struggling, but Broos hasn’t been willing to take on the responsibility of rehabilitating the former Montpellier man.
Yusuf Maart (Kaizer Chiefs)
Another Chiefs player to have been overlooked, Maart misses out amidst competition from the likes of Miguel Timm and former teammate Njabulo Blom.
Mduduzi Shabalala (Kaizer Chiefs)
While there can’t be too many complaints about Dolly or Maart’s exclusions, did Shabalala deserve a spot in the squad?
He’s been a ray of light for Chiefs recently, and his inclusion alongside Cassius Mailula would have truly heralded a new dawn for Bafana.
Lebogang Phiri (Paris FC)
Rebuilding his career in the French lower leagues with Paris FC following repeated injury problems, Phiri hasn’t yet done enough to earn a recall from Broos.
Thibang Phete (Al Bataeh)
A useful and versatile midfield option for Broos, Phete’s ability with the ball makes him the kind of player around whom this new Bafana side could be constructed.
His omission is somewhat perplexing.
Thembinkosi Lorch (Orlando Pirates)
Admittedly, Lorch has only recently returned from an injury absence, but his quality has been evident in spells since his comeback, and surely Lorch has a part to play in Broos’s Bafana side moving forward.
Bradley Grobler (SuperSport United)
Currently the top scoring South African player in the PSL—tied in top spot in the league with Namibia’s Peter Shaluile—did Broos just forget to include Grobler’s name on the list!?
His omission is bizarre.
