A 19-year-old Grade 10 learner was shot and killed inside the grounds of Ndengezi Intermediate School in KwaNdengezi, west of Durban, on Monday, 14 September 2026.

Details of the Incident
According to reports from the South African Police Service (SAPS) and local media, the victim and the alleged shooter arrived at the campus together shortly before the tragedy.
Witnesses and law enforcement noted that the suspect wore the exact same school uniform as the victim.
Once inside the school premises, the gunman drew a firearm and shot the 19-year-old multiple times in full view of fellow pupils.
Emergency medical personnel and police rushed to the scene, but the young learner succumbed to his injuries and was declared dead at the scene. Following the shooting, the suspect fled on foot while still dressed in the school uniform.

“The loss of a learner is always devastating, but for such a tragedy to occur within the school environment is particularly distressing,” Hlomuka stated.
To address the immediate trauma experienced by those present, the department confirmed that specialized psychosocial support teams and trauma counselors would be deployed to the school.
