SuperSport United veteran striker Thamsanqa Gabuza is believed to have rejected a move to Royal AM ahead of the transfer window deadline.

As previously reported by SABC Sport and subsequently confirmed by coach Gavin Hunt, the Tshwane outfit were prepared to sell the 35-year-old during the current January registration period for “financial reasons”.

Gabuza was linked heavily with a potential move to Stellenbosch FC, who have since turned their focus to another SuperSport forward, Iqraam Rayners, instead.

The public broadcaster’s sport desk has since established Royal AM proposed a deal with a sizeable package for Gabuza, but the player is thought to have turned it down.

“Well, it’s a budget thing. Obviously, we are bringing [Mamour] Niang now and there’s questions around age, plus an opportunity for the boy to get an extension.

“I am not sure if this thing is going to happen, maybe it will,” was Hunt’s comment nearly two weeks ago before naming Gabuza in the starting line-up against Swallows FC at the weekend.

A high-ranking source at SuperSport revealed Gabuza is in the final six months of his contract at SuperSport and is not likely to stay on their books beyond the current season, hence it made sense for him to move on.

But as things stand, although the window will close at midnight, the former Golden Arrows and Orlando Pirates star is prepared to stay at SuperSport and fight for his place despite confirmed news Zakhele Lepasa has joined them on loan from the Buccaneers for the remainder of the campaign.
