A shocking incident occurred on the N3 freeway in the Leondale area in Ekurhuleni on Saturday, 11 October. 

A four-year-old boy was hit by a truck as he was trying to cross the freeway.

Media liaison officer Millicent Kekana said EMPD’s Bike Unit responded to the scene and found the four-year-old boy lying critically injured on the side of the road.

“Initial reports suggest the child was attempting to cross the busy southbound freeway when the accident occurred.

“He sustained serious head injuries and was rushed to the nearest hospital for urgent medical treatment.”

Kekana said EMPD is using this incident to issue a stern reminder about road safety.

“The department urges all pedestrians to exercise extreme caution and avoid crossing freeways, emphasising that not only is it illegal, but it also poses a significant, potentially fatal risk.”

Additionally, she stated that the EMPD reminds adults to always supervise kids near roads and highways to prevent such tragic incidents and protect vulnerable young lives.
