The suspects, considered dangerous, were found hiding in a two-roomed shack among the congested informal dwellings in Inanda.
The gun battle left four suspects, wanted for murder, attempted murder, and armed robbery, dead in Amatikwe Area 2.
Resident Thandeka Mkhize said that when she heard the gunshots, she made sure her two kids were inside and locked the doors.
“When the shooting happens, I make sure that my family and I are safe in the house because I don’t want us to get hit by a stray bullet.
“After the shooting stopped, I didn’t even go out to see. I waited until the morning, and that was when I heard that cops shot the wanted suspects.”

She said that shootings have become so common in the area that residents have developed ways to keep themselves safe.
Another resident, Nhlanhla Dlamini, said he knew there would be deaths.
“Several shots were fired during this incident. I knew that some people would not survive. We are so used to these shootings. We hope police eventually manage to get rid of these criminals because they terrorise residents all the time,” he said.
KZN police spokesman Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed that cops acted on intelligence about the suspects, who were found at their hideout in a two-roomed shack in Amatikwe.
“When police arrived at the scene, a shoot-out ensued between the suspects and cops, which resulted in the four wanted suspects sustaining fatal gunshot wounds.”
