According to the Department of Transport and Community Safety, two sedans collided head-on and resulted in the loss of five lives and two injuries.
The department’s spokeswoman, Tidimalo Chuene, said: “Of the five who passed on, four were burnt beyond recognition and the two injured, who include a driver and passenger, were taken to a nearby hospital.”
Chuene said preliminary reports indicate that one of the vehicles tried to overtake.
Although SAPS is busy with investigations, recklessness cannot be ruled out.
MEC Violet Mathye sent a message of condolences to the families of the deceased.
“Our hearts are with the families and next-of-kin of those who lost their loved ones and at the same time wish a speedy recovery of those injured.”
“I once more urge all road users to be patient on the road. As a political head I am seriously concerned about these accidents which are caused by recklessness,” she said.
