SAPS spokesperson Captain Tintswalo Sibeko said officers arrived to find the woman with gunshot wounds. She was declared dead at the scene.
“Preliminary reports indicate that the deceased was allegedly followed by two unknown suspects who opened fire on her before fleeing the scene on foot,” Sibeko said.
Sibeko said the motive for the attack would form part of the investigation. No arrests have been made.
A female eyewitness told Scrolla.Africa the lawyer had just parked her car and greeted a car guard before two men approached her.
“One of them pulled the trigger and fled as the deceased fell on the ground,” the witness said.
The gunman ran into a security guard as he fled the scene. “He was asked what was wrong but he kept on running,” the witness said.
The eyewitness said the two men worked at a mine. She said the lawyer was representing a mining company in a dispute with workers who had allegedly been retrenched and were seeking their pay-outs.
The lawyer was dressed in a beige blouse, white pants and sandals at the time of the shooting.
