The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) is deeply worried about ongoing misuse of its uniforms.

Criminals are increasingly using the SANDF combat dress, commonly called Camouflage, during illegal activities.

This follows the emergence of a disturbing video that went viral on social media, showing suspects allegedly involved in criminal activities, impersonating soldiers by wearing camouflage in Botshabelo, Free State, which sparked outrage and concern.

In the trending video, the suspects are seen surrounded by community members, drawing widespread attention.

SANDF spokesman Prince Tshabalala confirmed that the individuals depicted in the viral video, believed to have been terrorising the community while wearing camouflage, were not authorised to use it and did not represent the SANDF.

“Members of the public are advised that the SANDF uniform is a registered item solely for the use by authorised members or those members identified by the chief of SANDF and appointed as honorary members of the various SANDF Force units or bases.”

“Any person who, without authority, possesses or wears prescribed uniforms, distinctive or performs any prohibited act is guilty of an offence or liable on conviction to a fine or imprisonment for a period not exceeding five years.”

Tshabalala emphasised that wearing SANDF camouflage without being a soldier is a punishable offence, and individuals found using it will face prosecution.

Community members, who wished to remain anonymous, shared with Daily Sun that the suspects were targeting residents in Section W and surrounding areas, stealing their belongings.

“They’re armed with dangerous weapons, taking cellphones, breaking into houses, and committing other crimes. They’re a threat to our community.”

“We’ve been reporting to the police that there’s serious crime in our section.”

“We’re relieved they’ve been arrested and hope justice is served. They were even pretending to be soldiers, wearing Comaflege,” said a 46-year-old single mum.
