Former Orlando Pirates star Wayne Sandilands looks set to take over as the Maritzburg United goalkeeper coach.

Sandilands has been unattached since parting ways with Pirates following the end of his contract in June.

The former Bafana Bafana goalie is on the verge of joining Maritzburg as a goalkeeper coach to mark his retirement as a professional footballer.

Sandilands will be replacing Motshweneng Mototo, who was shown the exit door along with John Maduka. The Malawian was axed after the KwaZulu-Natal side endured a series of poor results.

He left Maritzburg at the basement of the DStv Premiership table after 13 matches with only 11 points.

The management hierarchy made the necessary changes with the appointment of returnee Fadlu Davids.

Davids, the new head coach at Maritzburg, has been given the freedom to assemble his own backroom staff.

The soft-spoken tactician, Davids wants Sandilands, who is a seasoned campaigner, as his goalkeeper coach.

Davids and Sandilands enjoyed a good working relationship at Pirates. Together, they won the MTN8 title in 2020 and reached the CAF Confederations Cup final earlier this year.

The 2011-12 PSL Goalkeeper of the Season, Sandilands, is no stranger to coaching goalies.

He spent the majority of the 2021/22 season training the Sea Robbers’ shot-stoppers. This was after the departure of goalkeeper coach Andrew Sparkes.

Sandilands, 39, didn’t feature for Pirates that campaign. In fact, there were talks that he would be offered the goalkeeping coach job at the Soweto giants.

He also served as the goalkeeper coach at Pirates’ reserve side, competing in the DStv Diski Challenge (DDC).

However, Pirates opted to appoint the experienced Tyrone Damons, who is a former goalkeeper coach of Tanzanian giants Simba SC.

The 2016 CAF Champions League winner with Mamelodi Sundowns, will kickstart his coaching career in South Africa’s topflight at Maritzburg.

Davids will be expected to take Maritzburg out of the relegation zone after the FIFA World Cup break.
