Cape Town City have announced the signing of Wayde Lekay who looked set to join Maritzburg United this week.
Lekay, 25, was subject to interest from City back in the January transfer window but after some contractual disputes with Galaxy, they opted against moving for the forward.
When he became available as a free agent after parting ways with the Rockets, Lekay went on trial at Kaizer Chiefs and Royal AM and the Citizens rekindled their interest but head coach Eric Tinkler was left so impressed by 18-year-old Luke Daniels in pre-season, that he preferred to show faith in the young striker.
However, after three defeats from the opening three games, it became evident last season’s runners-up needed to bolster their attacking options the player has since penned a contract with the Citizens, which the club has since confirmed on Monday evening.
The news was first reported by FARPost earlier on Monday before iDiski Times had learnt Lekay signed his contract this morning and rejected a move to the Team of Choice.
And City are not done adding to their squad before the transfer window shuts on 22 September, as they look towards adding another centre-back to add further competition to their defence.
Lekay scored four goals in 17 league games for the Rockets last season but the City technical team is confident he can take his game to new heights at the DHL Stadium this season.
