Children were among the eight people killed in a crash on the N2 in Mandeni, northern KwaZulu-Natal, between a truck and a vehicle transporting school pupils on Friday.
IPSS Medical Rescue and IPSS Search & Rescue said the N2 was closed in both directions.
IPSS spokesperson Samantha Meyrick said the vehicles collided head-on.
She said a ninth person was critically injured.
Meyrick added that search and rescue personnel were also searching for missing children.
“This is an active scene, with the N2 closed in both directions between Bridges 18 and 19 on the KZN North Coast,” she said.
