The Khumalo family is devastated following the sentencing of a former police officer who killed his pregnant ex-wife in 2023 and then handed himself over to the police.
Jonas Tebogo Mpete, a police sergeant who was stationed at Rapid Rail in Silverton, Tshwane, was sentenced to 35 years and suspended five years for the premeditated murder of Ntombizodwa Khumalo.
National Prosecution Authority spokeswoman, Lumka Mahanjana said Mpete was sentenced by the Brits Regional Court on 16 August.
Khumalo, who worked as a switchboard operator, was at the entrance of a hospital when Mpete fired several shots, killing her instantly.
Her uncle, Jeffy said said they are not happy with the sentencing and the law has failed them.
He said they are disappointed in how it seems the justice system is more favourable to perpetrators than victims.
He pleaded for the death penalty to be brought back.
“Maybe it is time for the death penalty to be reinstated. We lost our child forever. She was the breadwinner. Now she is gone,” he said.
