Connie Ferguson is a South African-based Botswana actress, filmmaker, producer and businesswoman.

She is best known for her role as Karabo Moroka on South Africa’s most popular soap opera, Generations.

She has become a prominent figure in South African media throughout her career, known for her iconic presence.

Early Life

Connie Ferguson was born on 10 June 1970 in Kimberley, Northern Cape, South Africa. Her parents are Fish Masilo and Margaret Masilo, who are of Botswana and South African origin.

She grew up in Lobatse, Botswana, where she attended primary and secondary school.

She initially wanted to study law at the University of KwaZulu-Natal but switched to Drama and Performing Arts after failing criminal law in her second year.

Acting Career

Connie Ferguson started her career in 1991 as a model before switching to acting with minor roles in shows like Tropical Heat and Crime Reporter.

In 1994, she landed a significant role in one of Mzansi’s popular television soapies, Generations, where she played the role of Karabo Moroka, the wife of Tau Mogale.

She became one of the most loved and respected actresses in South Africa for her portrayal of Karabo, a strong and independent woman who faced many challenges and triumphs.

She stayed on Generations for 16 years until 2010, when she pursued other career options. She later returned to the show in 2014 for a short term to help relaunch Generations: The Legacy.

She also starred in other shows and films such as The Wild, Rockville, The Queen and Kings of Jo’burg, some of which were produced by her own company, Ferguson Films.

Connie has made numerous appearances in various advertisements. Specifically, she participated in the Ellerines campaign in 1990 and 1991, the Ultramel Custard campaigns in 1992 and 1995, Vaseline’s campaign in 1992, and Black Like Me’s campaign in 1998.

In 2013, she was a contestant in the 6th season of Strictly Come Dancing on SABC 3.

Ferguson Films

In 2011, Connie and her husband, Shona Ferguson, launched their film and television production company, Ferguson Films. The company has created numerous popular series for Mzansi Magic.

Among these are Rockville, iGazi, The Gift, The Throne, The Herd, The Queen, and The Imposter.

The couple frequently appears in their own productions, with Connie taking on the role of Mavis Mabaso in Rockville and the female lead in The Queen.

Cosmopolitan Magazine named Connie one of South Africa’s Ten Most Beautiful Women in 1993.

She also received a PAWE Young Artist Award in 1998 and a Recognition Award and Certificate of Excellence from the South African Foundation for Excellence and Achievement in the same year.

In 2009, she won the Audience Award for Best Dressed at the South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAs) for her role in Generations. She was also nominated for the Audience Award for Best Hero/Heroine at the SAFTAs for the same role.

In 2018, she was nominated for Best Actress in a TV Drama at the SAFTAs for her role in The Queen.

Additionally, she was recognized for her exceptional contribution to the local media industry at Glamour South Africa’s annual Woman of the Year gala in 2018.

Connie Ferguson Family

Connie married Neo Matsunyane in 1993, another actor and director on Skeem Saam, with whom she has a daughter named Lesedi. They divorced in 1998.

She later married Aaron “Shona” Ferguson in 2001, with whom she has a daughter named Alicia. The couple also raised Connie’s daughter from her previous marriage together.

Connie and Shona were among the most admired and influential couples in the South African entertainment industry, working together on several projects under their company Ferguson Films. Shona died in 2021.

Shona Ferguson’s death was tragic for the South African entertainment industry and his family. He died on 30 July 2021 at Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg from Covid-19-related complications. He was 47 years old.

He was buried at the Fourways Memorial Park after a private funeral, and a memorial service was held two days later.

Connie and his daughters Lesedi and Alicia paid tribute to him on social media, along with many other celebrities and fans who admired his work and legacy.
