More trouble for South African citizens as City Power continues to crack down on illegal connections.
According to Daily Sun, the power utility visited Kanana in Rabie Ridge on Wednesday, 16 October, where they removed illegal cables worth R6 million as part of an ongoing operation to protect the network and reduce power outages as well as damage to infrastructure.
According to City Power, the informal settlement is one of the areas that contribute to overloading and infrastructure damage, leading to prolonged outages.
The operation saw at least 60 000kg of cable confiscated.
According to Mangena, this is not the first time the utility pounced on the area.
He said they removed illegal connections a few months ago and confiscated 18 000kg of cable illegally connected to the grid, resulting in more strain on the grid.
“Last week, community members staged a public demonstration outside our Midrand Service Delivery Centre to raise their concerns about a prolonged outage which was caused by a damaged pole-mounted transformer.
“That transformer failed due to illegal connections. A new transformer has been installed and we hope with illegal connections removed, it’ll hold the load and remain operational for a long time,” he said
