Chiefs register five wins in a row against Pirates

Kaizer Chiefs collected their fifth successive Soweto Derby win over Orlando Pirates thanks to a late own goal by Olisa Ndah.

Around 75,000 fans were in attendance for the league’s most-watched fixture, and while both teams threatened in the opening quarter, there was just one shot on target, with Vincent Pule shooting straight at Brandon Petersen in the seventh minute.

Petersen did well to punch away Monnapule Saleng’s free kick in the 25th minute, and on the counter-attack, Ashley Du Preez had the first real chance of the game, following a quick counter. However, his shot after a sprint across the whole pitch only hit the side netting in the 25th minute.

Thembinkosi Lorch sent a powerful shot towards the goal in the 37th but Brandon Petersen was able to push it over the bar.

Just before half-time Chiefs threatened to open the scoring through Keagan Dolly, but Sipho Chaine did well to keep him out.

At the break, with tensions flaring, it remained goalless, while players from side’s clashed as they walked down the tunnel.

Terrence Dzvukamanja found himself in a promising position after 55 minutes but he didn’t connect properly with a cross from Innocent Maela.

Just five minutes later, Pirates Maela was shown a red card by match official Abongile Tom after he brought down Christian Saile Basomboli as last man close to the box.

Chaine saved the resulting free-kick from Dolly without too many issues. Pirates coach Sergio Almenara, who was in charge on the sidelines with Jose Riveiro suspended, reacted with bringing on Olisa Ndah and Thabang Monare for Thembinkosi Lorch and Ndlondlo.

Chiefs top goalscorer Bonfils-Caleb Bimenyimana entered the pitch after 76 minutes, as Zwane paired him with Saile for a first time, trying to find a later winner.

Ashley Du Preez had the best chance in the second half, but his volley from inside the box flew over the bar in the 86th minute.

However, it remained an overall poor game, with a lack of clear chances for either side, disrupted by many little fouls that prevented any real flow of the match.

There was still reason to celebrate for Arthur Zwane and his man as Ndah attempted a headed clearance from Edmilson Dove’s long ball that flew over an advancing Chaine and into the goal.

The three points see Chiefs draw level with their Soweto rivals on the log.
