Emotions ran high as football supporters from across the country gathered to pay their final respects to beloved Orlando Pirates superfan Charles Fantisi, affectionately known as Makhalanjalo.

The passionate supporter passed away on Friday, 6 March at Fountain Private Hospital in Carletonville after a short illness, leaving a deep void in the football community.

Fans from rival teams, including Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs, came out in large numbers dressed in their club colours to bid farewell to a man many described as a true soldier of the game.

Makhalanjalo was widely known for his unmatched passion, often attending matches topless with motivational messages written across his chest, inspiring both players and supporters.

Renowned Chiefs and Bafana Bafana supporter Masilo Machaka said he was shocked by the news, especially after seeing Makhalanjalo at a recent Soweto Derby.

“I have known Charles for a very long time, since around 1999 or 2000. Back then, even though there was rivalry, we would greet each other through songs before and during games. That’s the kind of person he was,” said Machaka.

Machaka said the football fraternity has lost a giant.

“We have lost a great man who dedicated his life to Orlando Pirates and supported Bafana Bafana through thick and thin. Today, we are here to celebrate his life,” he added.

Fellow Pirates supporter Jabu Bongwa described Makhalanjalo as a loyal fan who never missed a game.

“We are burying a brother who stood with the team through everything. We have lost a soldier who was always at the stadium,” he said.

Bongwa also made an emotional plea to the team.

“We are asking Orlando Pirates to win the league in his honour. Wherever he is, he will be happy to see the team succeed,” he said.

Another supporter, Pinky Sechabela, said attending matches will never be the same.

“It hurts deeply. It won’t be the same going to Orlando Stadium without seeing him in his usual spot,” she said.

The funeral service is being held at the Harry Gwala Multipurpose Hall on Saturday, 21 March, as the football community says goodbye to one of its most passionate supporters.
