Former public protector and EFF MP Advocate Busisiwe Mkhwebane has joined the uMkhonto weSizwe party (MK).

She was announced at a press briefing in Sandton, Joburg on Friday, 25 October. Mkhwebane was announced alongside former KZN premier and ANC veteran Willies Mchunu.

Mkhwebane will be the convener of the party in Mpumalanga, while Mchunu will be MK’s provincial leader in KZN. This comes as political parties are preparing for the upcoming 2026 local government elections.

Mkhwebane also joins her husband, David Skosana, who’s the MK MP. MK general secretary Dr Sifiso Maseko said Mchunu’s a struggle veteran and a seasoned cadre who has served in several positions in the ANC.

“Mchunu has the necessary political, ideological, and organisational capabilities to steer the party into a stable, responsible, and responsive movement in the province,” he said.

He said Mchunu will also be responsible for identifying leaders at the provincial and regional levels.

“We also take this opportunity to announce that Advocate Busisiwe Mkhwebane will be the convener of the uMkhonto Wesizwe party in the province of Mpumalanga,” announced Maseko.

He described her as a seasoned public servant and a true fighter for justice and equal rights.

“She’s a former public protector who was unlawfully removed from office for confronting the status quo and asking necessary and relevant questions to the sitting head of state,” said Maseko.

Mkhwebane said she joined the party because she felt it’s the home that understands the persecution of black people.

“I could relate with the constitution of MK; it’s what needs to be done to liberate our people,” she said.

When she resigned from the EFF last week, she said one of her reasons for leaving the party was that she felt her expertise were underutilised.

Mchunu said those who stay in KZN have aspirations, but those aspirations have not been met.“I dare say, having been in the leadership of my erstwhile party, we must admit there are things we are incapable of doing for the poor,” he said.
