Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has urged Evidence Makgopa to leave recently-relegated Baroka FC.

Baroka FC strker Evidence Makgopa was one of 23 players named in Hugo Broos’ squad for next month’s 2023 CAF Africa Cup of Nations qualifier between South Africa and North African giants Morocco.

The 21-year-old has scored three goals in eight appearances for Bafana Bafana and has been a regular in the squad since Broos’ arrival as head coach, but managed just four goals in the DStv Premiership this season for relegated Baroka FC.

Despite Makgopa’s lack of goals, the national team coach has retained his faith in his young striker’s abilities and urged him to find a move away from Bakgakga in order to further his development.

“No,” Broos said, when asked if he was satisfied with Makgopa’s progress. “I think you can do more with Evidence because he is a player with the right qualities and he is young.

“But you have to teach him how he has to run, how he has to control the ball and how he needs to take up a position in front of the goal. I can’t do that. I can’t do that.

“This is something that has to be done at the club. You have to work with this guy every day and he will become better because he is strong, he is tall and he is good with his head but there are still some things that he doesn’t have at the moment.

“I keep confidence in him because if I let him down now, he’s gone, and I don’t want that because this is a young with qualities.

“I hope that he will one day at a club where they will really work with him and you will see, he will be a good striker.”

“I really hope Evidence can change clubs so that he can stay in the Premiership,” Broos added, when asked if playing in GladAfrica Championship would affect the young striker’s national team prospects.

“I really hope it because if he goes to the second division, it would not be good for him. I’m not sure [if would pick a player from the second tier].

“I think if Evidence went into the second division, it would be very difficult for him to stay with Bafana Bafana. The difference would be bigger than it already is now, so it is very difficult.”
