The search for a missing 17-year-old matric pupil at Unobhala High school school, ended in tragedy when her body was found in the Msunduzi river, at Maqongqo today.
It is alleged that Amahle Nzimakwe from Ezinembeni returned from school on Sunday and asked her father if she can visit her relatives across the river in an area called Estingini.
The search started this morning at around 11am and her body was recovered after 20 minutes.
According to her father, Zamokwakhe Nzimakwe, losing his daughter has left him devastated.
“I told her not to cross the river if the water is overflowing, she should use the bridge. She promised me that she will do that but she didn’t,” said the distraught father.
He added that his daughter was supposed to visit their relatives and return home on the same day.
“I got a shock of my life when someone from the neighbourhood alerting me that he heard someone crying for help. We rushed to the scene to check and we found out that it is my child that was swept away in the river.”
He added that this incident has left him devastated as his daughter was his only hope to a better life.
uMgungundlovu SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Sifiso Gwala confirmed the incident and said an inquest docket has been opened for investigation.
