A heartbreaking tragedy has struck Tjatjaneng village in Ga-Mothapo outside Polokwane in Limpopo.

This after two young girls burned beyond recognition in a devastating house fire.

The victims, aged three and five, died after a backroom they were in caught fire on Saturday afternoon, 14 March.

According to preliminary police reports, the kids’ gogo allegedly left the house at around 2 pm to visit a nearby tuckshop, leaving the two kids inside the backroom while their great-grandmother remained in the main house.

While still at the tuckshop, she reportedly received information that the backroom had caught fire.

She rushed back home and found community members already trying to extinguish the flames.

Sadly, the two kids were discovered lying on top of the bed inside the room, burned beyond recognition.

Police spokesman Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said the exact cause of the fire is still unknown.

“The cause of the fire is currently unknown, and investigations are ongoing,” he said.

The Limpopo provincial commissioner, Lieutenant-General Thembi Hadebe, has expressed deep sadness over the tragedy and conveyed heartfelt condolences to the grieving family.

She has also ordered a thorough investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire.
