Another mine dam collapsed at the disaster-stricken Jagersfontein on Tuesday night, 27 September.

Free State Premier spokeswoman Palesa Chubisi said: “The Free State Provincial Government is still trying to establish the extent of

the water flow, however, it is understood that the water is running through the neighbourhood of Charlesville and the nearby Dennis Louw farm.”

She said the R706 is closed to traffic and motorists are advised to use alternative roads.

“The police and the emergency services are on the scene. Premier Ntombela has called for the community not to panic as the provincial disaster team has been activated to the affected area,” she said.

This is the second mine dam collapse in a space of two weeks.

On Monday, 26 September the community of Jagersfontein was excited when the government began rebuilding their homes after they were washed away by a mudslide on 11 September.

The first disaster left over 250 people displaced, one person reported dead and 70 people hospitalised.

Schools were amongst the infrastructure that was badly affected.
