AmaZulu FC have confirmed the club’s new captain following the exit of the previous skipper Makhehleni Makhaula who joined Orlando Pirates in the January transfer window.

Makhaula initially signed a pre-contract with Orlando Pirates agreeing to join them in July as his contract with Usuthu was set to run out in June.

However, there was a twist before the window closed as AmaZulu saw an opportunity to cash in on the transfer of the defensive midfielder rather than losing him for free in June.

Makhaula then switched to Ezimnyama Ngenkani on the last day of the window last month.

Now, Usuthu have appointed the goalkeeper Veli Mothwa as the club’s new captain. The former Chippa United shot-stopper is used to wearing an armband having been vice-captain prior to Makhaula’s exit.

“Yes, Veli [Mothwa],” Folz confirmed when asked about the appointment of a new skipper.

Mothwa has been with the KZN-based side since 2020. And last year, he reportedly signed a new contract that will keep him at the club until 2026.

Meanwhile, two weeks ago, Folz admitted that his side would miss Makhaula but was confident that they would be able to find a replacement within the squad.

“It’s a life of a professional football club, you have players coming and leaving,” he said.

“We wish him the best where he heads off now and he’s always gonna be remembered in a good way at AmaZulu.

“A player leaving gives another opportunity to a player who might grab an opportunity that opens.

“So, yes he’s a good player and he was important for us. I’m sure that whoever is gonna cover the position is gonna do the job I expect [them] to do so.

“When it comes to replacing him or not, I cannot go into that much [in] details. But I can tell you that we know exactly what we’re doing.

“And if you didn’t see something, you’ll see something else soon.”
