Evil struck when 19-year-old sangoma Gontse Makhubela from Jericho, North West, was killed, burnt and her remains stuffed in a plastic bag.

Her family and fellow izangoma believe she was murdered for her powers and body parts.

Police later discovered human tissue in an indumba belonging to 26-year-old sangoma Aizeque Zacaria Cumbuia from Winterveld, Tshwane.

He’s now behind bars on possession of human tissue charges.

Gontse’s gogo, sangoma Maria Mongwe (76), is heartbroken.

“Gontse is my granddaughter. I’m hurt. They even took her body parts to use. Why didn’t he kill his own kid? A sangoma who uses human body parts is a witch,” she said.

Fellow sangoma Nthabiseng Skhosana (35) said they now live in shame because of fake healers.

“We are struggling to wear our beads because people think we are killers. People like him must rot in jail. We don’t want him in our community,” she said.

Gontse’s aunt, Onicca Makhubela (69), said the family buried ashes and a badly injured head.

“She was murdered at night and burnt the whole night. Her remains were inside a plastic grocery bag. Gontse was brutally murdered. We can’t eat or sleep,” she cried.

She revealed that Gontse appears to them in dreams, telling them not to cry.

Ward 24 ANC branch secretary Alice Fakude called for justice.

“The killing of women and kids must end. We want justice for Gontse. Aizeque must rot in jail,” she said.

Cumbuia appeared briefly in the Ga-Rankuwa Magistrates Court on Wednesday, 10 September 2025.
