Legendary music group Ladysmith Black Mambazo is mourning the loss of one of its longest-serving members, Albert Mazibuko, who passed away at the age of 77.
Albert, who was born in Ladysmith, Embuzweni, was a respected elder, cultural custodian and a pillar of the world-renowned isicathamiya group.

His death marks a significant loss not only for the group but for South African music as a whole.
In an official statement released on Monday, 6 April, the group confirmed his passing and reflected on his immense contribution over the decades.
“It is with deep sorrow that we confirm the passing of Mr Albert Mazibuko (77), born in Ladysmith, Embuzweni. A revered elder, cultural custodian, and long-standing member of the legendary Ladysmith Black Mambazo,” the statement read.
Mazibuko dedicated more than 50 years of his life to music after joining the group in 1969.
Over the years, his voice became an integral part of the group’s signature sound, helping to shape its global success.
The group described him as more than just a performer, highlighting his role as a mentor and historian within the ensemble.
“Affectionately known as ‘the librarian,’ he was a keeper of the group’s rich history and a source of wisdom to many.”
“He was truly an intelligent man, whose knowledge, humility, and quiet strength left a lasting impression on all who had the privilege of working alongside him,” the statement said.
Mazibuko also played a crucial role in preserving and promoting isicathamiya music, working closely to uphold the vision of the group’s founder.
“Through his work, he helped carry forward the vision of Dr Joseph Shabalala, ensuring that the beauty and significance of isicathamiya music reached global audiences,” the statement added.
His passing has been described as the end of an era for the group and its supporters.
“His passing marks the end of an era,” the group said.
The group extended condolences to his loved ones and asked for privacy during this difficult time.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, loved ones, and all who were touched by his life and legacy.”
