Several communities in the Thulamela Local Municipality have been affected by flooding following heavy rainfall across parts of the municipality, causing damage to infrastructure and disrupting movement in some areas.

The municipality said the persistent rains have resulted in washed-away roads, damaged bridges and flooding of homes in low-lying areas.

Among the affected areas is the R523 at Thathe, where a mudslide has been reported, posing a risk to motorists using the route.

The Tshwinga Bridge is also overflowing as water levels continue to rise, raising concerns about the safety of motorists and pedestrians crossing the bridge.

Authorities have reported severe erosion along the R524 road in Lwamondo, near Masakona Church, which could further affect road conditions if the rains continue.

Meanwhile, the Tshikunda Bridge, situated between Donald Fraser Hospital and the R523 Phiphidi Road, has been damaged by the flooding.

The municipality said it is working closely with the Vhembe District Municipality, disaster management teams and other stakeholders to assess the extent of the damage and implement the necessary interventions.

Residents have been urged to exercise extreme caution during the rainy conditions. Motorists are strongly advised not to attempt to cross flooded bridges or roads, as water levels can rise rapidly and pose a danger.
