A couple Masotja Ngomane and Mpumi Shongwe were shot and killed inside their home in Chochocho outside White River, Mpumalanga in the early hours of Sunday morning, 15 March.

Residents said the brutal shooting left them shaken, especially as the suspects are still on the loose.

Masoyi community policing forum chairman Vusi Mamindze said people are struggling to come to terms with the killing.

“As a community, we are not okay. Last year the same thing happened where two people were gunned down in the house. The victims were also related.

“We are now living in fear because we don’t know who might be next at this stage. The people who did this have not been found,” said Mamindze.

He said the couple worked as security guards.

“We didn’t know them as people who were not well behaved in the community. That’s why it becomes difficult for us to understand what might have been the motive,” he said.

“The community is looking to us for answers, and we don’t have those answers. We are requesting the community to work together. The killers must be found,” he said.

He stated that fear is making it difficult for people to speak out.

“Even if people saw something, they might be scared to talk because these people are unknown,” he said

Mamindze said the community is working closely with police and urged anyone with information to come forward.

“We are calling on everyone who has information to assist the police so that those responsible can be arrested,” he said.

Police spokesman Colonel Mavela Masondo said a couple, aged 45 and 35, was gunned down in their house.

He said the motive for the killing cannot be confirmed at this stage.

“Police appeal to anyone who might have information that can help in the investigation or help in the apprehension of the suspect/s to call the nearest police station or CrimeStop on 0860 10111,” he said.
