The truck was reportedly delivering booze in the area when a group of people suddenly started looting it.

Witnesses said abahlali grabbed crates of alcohol and ran away from the scene.

A resident, who spoke to the SunTeam, said she was relaxing in her shack when chaos ensued.

She said Cape Town has been experiencing a heatwave since Monday.

“I went outside earlier, but the heat was too much, so I went back inside and sat. I then heard some noises, but didn’t know what was happening,” she said

The woman said she rushed outside to see what was going on.

“I rushed and saw people carrying booze and running away. Some individuals were even carrying two crates. I immediately rushed to the scene where I also got some and ran away.”

She said that some people first went home with the alcohol and later came back to take more.

However, things soon changed when people heard sirens.

The resident said people started running away when they realised cops were on the way.

Videos of the incident quickly spread on social media. Many people online joked that Langa residents had found a way to cool themselves during Cape Town’s heatwave.

However, some residents were unimpressed.

A resident from Zone 23, Tania Rasmeni (51) said the looting was wrong and could cost someone their job.

She said the truck driver and his colleagues looked helpless as people grabbed the alcohol.

“The driver of the vehicle and those he works with were hopeless as the crowd took away booze. Surely, these people will have to answer to their bosses on how the booze got looted. This puts their jobs on the line,” said Tania.

She added that the looting only stopped after cops arrived at the scene.

Western Cape police spokeswoman Constable Ndakhe Gwala confirmed the incident.

“Kindly be advised that police are aware of the incident. However, no official report has been made,” she said.

Gwala said police are waiting for the victims to open a case.
