Remembering South Africa’s Fallen Football Stars

South African football has lost many talented players over the years. Here’s a list of some of the most notable South African footballers who passed away:

Violent Deaths

Senzo Meyiwa: The former Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana captain was tragically shot and killed in 2014 in Vosloorus.

Luke Fleurs: The Kaizer Chiefs defender was fatally shot in a carjacking incident in 2024 in Johannesburg.

Marc Batchelor: The former Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates, and Mamelodi Sundowns striker was shot and killed in 2019 in Johannesburg.

Ewert ‘The Lip’ Nene: The former footballer was stabbed to death in 1976 in KwaThema.

Ariel ‘Pro’ Kgongoane: The former Kaizer Chiefs captain was killed during the Soweto uprising in 1976.

Oshwin Andries: South African footballer sadly passed away on February 4, 2023, at the age of 19. Thembinkosi Mbamba: A talented South African footballer, sadly passed away on May 25, 2019, in a car accident in Duduza, Gauteng, at just 23 years old.
