With Siyabonga Ngezana facing criticism, the FCSB president has come out in his defence, stating that the Bafana Bafana star told his coach that he was tired but was ignored.

Romania’s defending champions, FCSB, have endured a hugely underwhelming campaign and currently sit 11th in the Romanian SuperLiga, 12 points adrift of the top of the table.

As a result, there has been a noticeable dip in form across the squad, with Ngezana not exempt from the decline in performances.

The two-time Romanian SuperLiga Defender of the Season has faced criticism for his displays, but the FCSB president has now explained the situation in his defence.

FCSB president Mihai Stoica told FANATIK SUPERLIGA: “Ultimately, he proved to be an exceptional player.”

“He had many problems. I will recount a discussion that Elias had this season with Ngezana. He said: ‘Coach, let me not play this match. I’m not well.’

“Elias said: ‘We have no other solution.’ He replied: ‘Alright, one half?’ Elias said no. Ngezana insisted: ‘Coach, I’m tired.’

“Where is he tired – in his head or in his legs? And Ngezana gestured to his head. Footballers can also be mentally tired.

“There are footballers who are afraid of flying. Ngezana was constantly on planes. He arrived, went to the Africa Cup of Nations, then played in temperatures that Africa will never experience.

“He was not prepared for this match. There were no solutions. Are we really all amateurs? There is also a stupid regulation in the competition.”

“You cannot make changes to the squad if the transfer window is open. There are clubs that act during this transfer period.

“There are many things that happen and it is easy to accuse, but there are also players’ personal problems. There are many factors that contribute to the performances of teams and players.”
