Orlando Pirates sanctioned the sale of Mbekezeli Mbokazi to Chicago Fire in the MLS. Now, questions arise as to who can replace the 20-year-old Bafana Bafana man.

According to the Citizen, Orlando Pirates have a first pick and a back-up choice to replace Mbekezeli Mbokazi.

Polokwane City and Bafana Bafana star Thabang Matuludi has been earmarked as a potential replacement and has been on their radar for some time.

Matuludi, 26, can cover at right-back and centre-back. He’s also fit again after a spate of injuries and will be looking to impress at the 2025 AFCON.

The Buccaneers will be keen to make a move for the player in January, and although Matuludi is in demand, the Soweto giants remain his first choice should he choose to leave Polokwane.

Meanwhile, left-footed Durban City star Mfanafuthi Mkhize is another option if Matuludi proves to be out of reach.

He’s been an ever-present for the impressive PSL newcomers, appearing in all 15 of their league games to date.

Meanwhile, Tshegofatso Mabasa was the finest striker in the country in 2024, but he might have no option but to leave as he sits behind several players in the pecking order.

There’s also talk of differences between Mabasa and Broos, which has led to the player’s continued exile from the national team setup.
