The police have confirmed the discovery of the body of missing Durban University of Technology (DUT) Indumiso Campus student, Manqoba Mnyandu (20).
Mnyandu, a third-year nursing student, was reported missing last Tuesday after he failed to return to his student residence in Imbali.
According to his roommate, Mnyandu had gone to a nearby tuckshop but never came back.
He left his phone in his room and was supposed to return after a short while.
When his roommate noticed that he had not come back after several hours, he immediately raised the alarm and reported him missing.
Mnyandu had been missing for more than a week. He was last seen wearing a black cap, a light grey jacket and brown trousers.
KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed that Mnyandu’s body was found on Thursday in a bush near his place of residence.
Alexandra police are investigating an incident in which a man believed to be in his twenties was found in the bush near his place of residence.
“The circumstances surrounding his death remain under investigation. An inquest (docket) has been opened while police continue to gather evidence,” said Netshiunda.
Mnyandu’s family also confirmed his death to The Witness.
Alan Khan, senior director of corporate affairs at DUT confirmed the incident is currently under police investigation and we are unable to provide any further details at this time.
“On behalf of the University, we extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, classmates and all who knew him. May his soul rest in peace,” said Khan.
Earlier this week, DUT was affected by the tragic death of Sphiwokuhle Madela who was a third year Diagnostic Radiography student at the Steve Biko campus.
“We recognise that this has been a very painful and tragic week for our community, and our thoughts and prayers are with everyone mourning the loss of both Mr Mnyandu and Mr Madela,” added Khan.
