A deeply tragic incident has left the Mamelodi community in shock and mourning after four members of the same family drowned at the Delfie Quarry Dam during what was meant to be a sacred traditional cleansing ritual.

The victims have been identified as a 51-year-old mother, her 36-year-old daughter, and two sons aged in their early 20s.

According to early reports, the family visited the dam to perform a customary bathing ritual believed to have spiritual significance.

However, the spiritual moment turned into a nightmare when all four family members entered the water and never came out alive.

Emergency services were called to the scene after another daughter, who had not entered the water, witnessed the tragedy unfold.

Unable to rescue her loved ones, she ran in desperation to seek help. By the time assistance arrived, it was too late.

Tshwane Emergency Services spokesperson Charles Mabaso confirmed the incident, stating that divers were dispatched and all four bodies were recovered from the dam later that day.

“It is a tragic scene. The community is devastated. We extend our condolences to the family,” said Mabaso.

The area surrounding the Delfie Quarry Dam is known to be dangerous due to deep, unpredictable waters and a lack of safety measures.

While the dam is often used for traditional rituals and recreational purposes, residents have raised concerns in the past about its safety, especially when it comes to unsupervised rituals and gatherings.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances of the drowning.

Community leaders have since urged families and traditional healers to exercise caution during rituals involving open water, particularly in secluded or unregulated locations.

The City of Tshwane has offered trauma counseling to the bereaved family and others affected by the incident. A memorial service is expected to be held in the coming days.

As the community reels from this painful loss, many are calling for more awareness and safety interventions around local water bodies to prevent such incidents from recurring.
