A DStv Premiership club is closing in on Andile Jali ahead of his Mamelodi Sundowns exit.
After almost five years at Sundowns, Jali’s time at the club looks set to finally end in June.
His contract ends in June after a turbulent period at the club. The 2021/22 midfielder of the season has made eight starts for the Brazilians.
He is yet to return to action since his suspension in February. And coach Rulani Mokwena has already entrusted Teboho Mokoena to play in that holding midfield position.
The Bafana Bafana midfielder, Mokoena, even captains the side at times. While Jali has been linked to Kaizer Chiefs, FARPost can reveal that Amakhosi are out of the picture.
The club leading the race to sign Jali is Stellenbosch FC, who have already contacted the player and management.
Stellenbosch are under Steve Barker, who handed Jali his debut back in the National First Division in 2007.
‘AJ’ was the cream of the crop at the Coca-Cola football stars in Pretoria in 2008 and ended up at AmaTuks.
According to a Stellies source, Barker is keen to work with Jali again. “Coach Steve has previously worked with him and is keen to have him come through this side.
“The only possible impediment I see is the issue of the salary. His Sundowns salary may be too steep for us,” explained the source.
Jail arrived at Sundowns in June 2018 after cutting ties with Belgian outfit KV Oostende. He spent over four years in Belgium after joining them from Orlando Pirates.
Barker recently stressed the need to start challenging higher up on the league table. He believes that to achieve that; they must bring in quality and retain their top players like Junior Mendieta, Sibongiseni Mthethwa and Iqraam Rayners.
“It is important for us as a football club to also be successful, and that will be by retaining our players.” Efforts to get a comment from Jali’s agent, Mike Makaab, were fruitless as his phone rang unanswered.
