The South African Football Association (SAFA) has confirmed the appointment of Victor Gomes as the new Chairperson of the National Referees Committee.
Gomes is widely considered one of the continent’s greatest-ever officials and retired from the game after the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
While he divided opinion in the local game and was often accused by coaches to be the center of attention, he represented one of the most renowned and respected referees South Africa has ever produced.
When word of his retirement came to light SAFA hinted that they may seek to lure him into the association as part of developing the new wave of officials, especially during the time when referring in the country has come under the microscope.
“It’s early days, but all I can say is, the same trust you had with me on the field of play is the same commitment I have and offer this department and association in our country,” Gomes said upon his appointment on Friday afternoon.
“I’m prepared to work from the ground up and start working hard, this is my commitment to the association and this country.”
