Former Nigeria youth international Denis Nya is reported to be on Kaizer Chiefs’ radar ahead of the South African winter transfer window.

The 26-year-old defender is currently on the books of Zambian giants Zesco United and his exploits are believed to have attracted interest from Amakhosi.

GOAL profiled the West African player.

Nya was nurtured in the Canaan United academy in the Nigerian city of Calabar between 2011 and 2013.

He was coached by Super Eagles international John Ene Okon during his time with the academy.

The Calabar-born player represented Nigeria at the 2013 Under-17 Afcon finals in Morocco where the Golden Eaglets finished second and qualified for the Fifa U17 World Cup finals.

Nya was named in the final Golden Eaglets squad for the World Cup in the UAE, but did not feature in any match as the West African side went all the way and won the global tournament.

Some of his former Golden Eaglets teammates are Kelechi Iheanacho, Taiwo Awoniyi and Francis Uzoho

The strongly-built player began his career at Nigerian second tier side Ekiti United in 2013, before moving to top-flight club Lobi Stars two years later.

Nya became a nomadic player as he left Stars for fellow top-flight side Akwa United in 2017 and he played alongside Orlando Pirates star Olisa Ndah during his time with the Promise Keepers.

He joined Plateau United on a season-long deal in 2020 and upon his return to the Promise Keepers he filled the void left by Ndah who had joined Pirates in July 2021.

In January 2023, Nya secured his first move outside Nigeria as he was signed by Zesco on a two-year deal.

The dreadlocked player has walked straight into the Zega Mambo starting line-up and his exploits are said to have attracted interest from Chiefs.

Nya has proved to be a defender capable of finding the back of the net having netted important goals during his time with Lobi and Akwa.

He scored in the final of the 2016 Benue State FA Cup against Dreams FC for Lobi before scoring goals for Akwa in the Nigeria Professional Football League and Caf Confederation Cup.

The central defence has been a problem for Amakhosi this season with coach Arthur Zwane having made many changes as he searches for his best central defence partnership.

Erick Mathoho’s contract with the four-time PSL champions is set to expire at the end of this season and Chiefs are unlikely to extend the deal as the ageing centre-back has fallen out of favour under Zwane.

The Soweto giants recently signed Christian Basomboli Saile from Zesco’s Zambian rivals Nchanga Rangers and the DR Congolese striker has hit the ground running at Naturena-based giants.

Chiefs are now believed to be monitoring Nya ahead of the upcoming local winter transfer window.
