Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Yusuf Maart has played down the responsibilities he’s needed to undertake in his debut season and says Samkelo Zwane is adapting quickly to his role.

Maart arrived as a marquee off-season signing from Sekhkhune United in a deal in the region of R5-million after an exceptional two seasons with Babina Noko.

A gifted deep-lying playmaker, capable of playing as an eight or a ten and breaking into the senior national team saw him herald as an important signing in the Amakhosi revival.

However, things haven’t been easy for Maart, more so since the exit of Njabulo Blom – who starred alongside as a defensive cover in the midfield double pivot – to Major League Soccer side St Louis City SC.

“To have a responsibility, everyone has, in everyone position, it’s not like you can say [I have more], because we as a team and whoever plays with me, you just have to guide the person and know what to do in the position,” Maart said when asked if he feels he’s been given too much responsibility.

With the 21-year-old Zwane coming in since Blom’s departure, he enjoyed an impressive full debut on new years eve against Golden Arrows as they ran out 2-0 winners – but in the matches that followed, Sekhukhune United, AmaZulu, and Mamelodi Sundowns, he’s paid his proverbial school fees – for his lack of positional sense and awareness at times.

But Maart hinted it’s just a matter of time before the talented midfielder gets to grips with the DStv Premiership as he transitions from the pace of the DStv Diski Challenge.

“Samkelo’s performances have been good, it’s just here and there he needs to grow, he knows for sure he is still learning, we’re helping him in the game where we can at the moment where we can – we help him in games. So I think he’s learning a lot now.”

Yusuf Maart has featured 18 times for the Soweto giants this season, scoring one goal in the Soweto Derby triumph against Orlando Pirates before the mid-season break.
