Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has revealed that he’s spoken directly to Percy Tau regarding the player’s recent absence from the national team set up and his playing time at Ah Ahly.

Broos announced his 30-man preliminary squad for friendlies against Mozambique and Angola at the start of November. A notable omission was Al Ahly’s Percy Tau.

The 28-year-old was also absent from the squad that beat Sierra Leone and Botswana in September and the Belgian coach has revealed that he’s spoken to the forward.

“Percy knows what I think about him and he agrees with that,” Broos said.

“I spoke to him, a month ago I think, for the camp in September I spoke to him and he agreed, [I said] when you don’t play I can’t pick you and he agreed and said ‘yes, it’s better for me also, because I’m not at one hundred percent.’

“So don’t think a guy who hasn’t played in two or three months is ready to help the national team, forget it.”

The Bafana international has struggled with injuries this year and was sidelined with a hamstring injury in August, in addition to missing a large part of the side’s pre-season.

Tau only returned to action for the Egyptian side towards the end of October.

“We have to be more severe even when it’s Percy tau, if Percy Tau doesn’t play for months, he’s not ready. it’s reality. So let’s hope he plays in the next months,” added Broos.

Broos will hope to have Tau back at full fitness when South Africa faces Liberia next year in March with Afcon qualification on the line.
