Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Yusuf Maart is optimistic that his long-range goal against Orlando Pirates in a Soweto derby could earn him the goal of the season gong.

Maart scored from his half last Saturday when Amakhosi defeated their Soweto rivals at the sold-out FNB Stadium to earn Chiefs a 1-0 win over Pirates.

Maart revealed after the match that he was alerted by his teammate Khama Billiat that Pirates goalkeeper Siyabonga Mpontshane was out of his line; hence he unleashed the long-range, which earned Amakhosi maximum points.

It was his first Soweto derby since he joined Amakhosi at the beginning of the season from Sekhukhune united.

His goal has been making rounds in social media and was recognised by Fifa for a possible Puskas Award nomination.

“I am grateful to play for a big team and playing in front of a crowd like that is something wonderful and I really appreciate the support,” Maart told the club website.

Speaking about ‘The ‘Goal’, he recounts casually, “It was something special. I saw the goalkeeper off his line, and I just hit it directly to the poles, and it went in.”

However, on the point that it has been ‘trending’ all over the world, the star responds with an impish wink and a smile,” Ja, it’s obvious. Like they say, It’s ‘Goal of the Season’.”

Suppose his goal gets nominated for the prestigious Fifa Award.

In that case, he will become the fifth SA player, following Katlego Mphela, Siphiwe Tshabalala, Hlompho Kekana and Oscarine Masuluke, who have all been nominated for the Puskas Award.
