Former Kaizer Chiefs head of scouting Walter “Baresi” Steenbok has been confirmed as the new South African Football Association (SAFA) Technical Director today.

According to SABC Sport, The decision of the SAFA Technical Committee to fill the position that has been vacant for the past two years, since the departure of the former Bafana Bafana captain Neil Tovey, was ratified at the SAFA National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Johannesburg on Saturday.

SAFA’s head of coaching education Frans Mogashoa has been acting in this position for the past two years.

Steenbok had emerged as one of the favourites for the vacant position early last year and was believed to have been highly recommended by an independent panel that SAFA had enlisted.

Other candidates also believed to have done well during that process included the Mauritius Football Association (MFA) TD Zunaid Mall, who was also the technical advisor to the Council of Southern African Football Associations (COSAFA) and a former SAFA technical officer for Gauteng in Joe de Oliviera.

The top three candidates then followed up with presentations to the SAFA Technical Committee and this is where Steenbok was understood to have impressed the FA.

The 50-year-old, who is also a former coach of Basotho Tigers in the NFD and Benoni Premier United in the Premiership, was said to have top scored by a huge margin after giving an impressive presentation on the future of South African football to the independent panel.

He outlined key areas of critical importance, which included women’s football, grassroots and a high-performance programme, as well as the integration of sports science and modern coaching.

Author of Football Scouting Bible, a book mainly focused on scouting in South African and African football, Steenbok also has strong academic credentials, which are a requirement for this critical position at the FA.

He has just completed a Master’s Degree in Sport Directorship from the Manchester Metropolitan University and holds a CAF A coaching license as well as a CAF coaching instructor certificate.

Recently Steenbok also graduated with an MBA from the Real Madrid Sports Business Management programme.
