Lyle Foster is in line to follow in Percy Tau’s footsteps after being nominated for the player of the season in Belgium’s second tier.

The South African forward joined Belgium’s second division side Westerlo on loan at the beginning of the season from Portugal side premier division side Guimaraes.

Tau was named player of the season back in 2019 when he was on loan at Union SG after he first join Brighton & Hove Albion.

The 21-year-old came through the Orlando Pirates youth development and was promoted to the senior side in the season of 2017/18. Since then the Pirates youth product has been in France with Monaco, Belgium with Cercle Brugge, and Portugal with Guimaraes.

This past season he made his mark in Belgium after helping Westerlo gain automatic promotion, and the club decided to sign him permanently in a record deal.

“Westerlo has always been my first choice, after our great season, I would like to continue to a new chapter with this group,” .

“I am therefore grateful to the club for the confidence that I have received. Hopefully, I can repay them with performance on the pitch”

“I believe that we can achieve something special in 1A. As a footballer, you play to be first. We also. That may sound ambitious, but you don’t start a competition to finish fourteenth or fifteenth”

“Now I have some more experience. The season with Westerlo in 1B was important for my progression, to take the next step in my career. Next year I want to show that I have grown as a player.

“Am looking forward to the match against Cercle? No special. Westerlo is the newcomer in 1A, for us every match is one to look forward to. Although the matches against Club Brugge, Anderlecht and Antwerp will be even more special.

Anyway, the confidence in a good season is great. We are completely ready for the 1A experience.”

Foster featured in 26 appearances in all competitions, scoring five goals and six assists. Westerlo will now participate in Belgium Pro League after winning Belgium second division with 56 points in 28 games.
